Make this creamy, savory French Onion Dip from scratch. Slow-cooked caramelized onions give this classic party appetizer deep flavor that beats any mix.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup sour cream, full fat
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise, full fat
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes until they are deeply golden brown and sweet. Reduce heat if they start to burn.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Let the onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until everything is well combined.
  5. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Serve this crowd pleasing dip cold with your favorite chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the sour cream with cream cheese, softened.
  • If you need a quick dip, you can use 1 packet of dry onion soup mix instead of caramelizing fresh onions, but the flavor will be less deep.
  • This dip tastes best when made one day ahead of serving.
