Make a rich, smooth chocolate sauce using simple pantry staples. This quick recipe is perfect for topping ice cream, pancakes, or using as a decadent dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium saucepan. Whisk these dry ingredients together until fully mixed.
  2. Pour in the water and whisk until the mixture is smooth and no lumps remain.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture begins to boil. Reduce the heat slightly to maintain a gentle boil.
  4. Cook for exactly 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Do not overcook, or the sauce may become grainy.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Immediately whisk in the butter until it melts completely and incorporates into the sauce.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Let the sauce cool slightly before using. It will thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • For a glossier finish, add the butter after removing the sauce from the heat.
  • If the sauce thickens too much upon cooling, whisk in a tablespoon of hot water or milk to reach your desired consistency.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.
