Ingredients
Scale
4 large baking apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 4 pieces
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a small baking dish.
Wash the apples. Use a paring knife or apple corer to remove the core from each apple, leaving the bottom intact so the filling stays inside.
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together.
Stuff the center cavity of each apple with the sugar and spice mixture. Place one small piece of butter on top of the filling in each apple.
Pour the water into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. This prevents sticking and creates steam.
Place the stuffed apples into the baking dish.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Baking time depends on the size and type of apple you use.
Carefully remove the apples from the oven. Spoon any liquid from the bottom of the dish over the apples before serving warm.
Notes
For a crisp topping, mix 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1 tablespoon flour, and 1 tablespoon melted butter, and sprinkle this mixture over the top of the apples before baking.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for a richer dessert.
If your apples are very large, you may need to increase the baking time by 5 to 10 minutes.
