Ingredients
Scale
6 slices thick bread (like Brioche or Texas Toast)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter, for the griddle
Optional toppings: Maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries
Instructions
In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until fully combined. This creates your simple custard soak recipe.
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt until it sizzles slightly.
Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, turning quickly to coat both sides. Do not let the bread soak too long; you want it coated, not soggy.
Place the coated bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the cooked slice and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
Serve immediately with your favorite toppings for a delicious breakfast.
Notes
For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or day-old bread.
If you want a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
To keep a large batch warm while you finish cooking, place cooked slices on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven.
