Make a large batch of this rich, creamy homemade hot cocoa mix using simple pantry staples. This no-cook recipe is perfect for stocking your kitchen or creating thoughtful holiday food gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups powdered milk (or use the variation below for no powdered milk)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (use good quality for best flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for extra warmth)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, for richer flavor)

Instructions

  1. Combine the powdered milk, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using) in a very large bowl.
  2. Whisk the dry ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture is uniform in color and texture. This step is important for an even mix.
  3. If you are adding chocolate chips, pulse them briefly in a food processor until they are finely ground, or skip this step if you prefer a simpler mix. Add the ground chips to the dry mixture and whisk again.
  4. Store the finished hot cocoa mix in an airtight container. This recipe makes a big batch that keeps well in the pantry for several months.
  5. To prepare one serving, mix 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Whisk until smooth and enjoy your cozy winter beverage.

Notes

  • For a creamy hot cocoa mix without powdered milk, substitute the 4 cups of powdered milk with 2 cups of finely ground dry milk powder substitute (like soy or oat powder) or simply omit the milk powder and use 1.5 cups of hot milk instead of water when preparing each serving for a richer result.
  • This mix is excellent for DIY hot chocolate gift jars; layer the mix with mini marshmallows and tie a ribbon around the jar.
  • Use high-quality cocoa powder to achieve a gourmet hot chocolate mix flavor.
