Make this easy, creamy kielbasa pasta in a single pot for a comforting weeknight dinner with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 ounces penne pasta (or preferred short pasta)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced kielbasa and cook until lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Remove the sausage and set it aside.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the same pot and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), chicken broth, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Add the dry pasta to the boiling liquid. Stir well. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the pasta is nearly tender.
  5. Stir in the heavy cream, cooked kielbasa, and frozen peas (if using). Cook uncovered for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and the peas are heated through.
  6. Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  7. Serve immediately. This is a quick dinner idea for fast family meals.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use smoked sausage instead of standard kielbasa.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for heavy cream if you prefer a slightly lighter sauce.
  • This recipe is a great example of low cleanup pasta recipes.
