Learn how to steam broccoli to achieve perfect crisp-tender texture and vibrant green color using three simple methods: stovetop, microwave, or Instant Pot. Finish with a quick garlic butter sauce for maximum flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of broccoli (about 1 pound)
  • 1 cup water (for stovetop/Instant Pot)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the broccoli: Wash the head of broccoli. Cut the head into uniform, bite-sized florets. You can chop the stalk into small pieces too, but cook the stalk pieces for one minute longer than the florets.
  2. Choose your steaming method:
  3. Stovetop Method (Best for Crisp-Tender): Place a steamer basket inside a large pot. Add 1 cup of water, ensuring the water level is below the basket. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Add the broccoli to the basket, cover the pot tightly, and reduce the heat to medium. Steam for 4 to 5 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and crisp-tender.
  4. Microwave Method (Fastest): Place the broccoli florets in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of water. Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe plate or vented lid. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes. Check for doneness; add 30 seconds if needed.
  5. Instant Pot Method: Pour 1 cup of water into the Instant Pot liner. Place the trivet inside and arrange the broccoli florets on top. Secure the lid and set the valve to sealing. Cook on High Pressure for 0 minutes (this relies on the natural release time). Allow the pressure to naturally release for 3 minutes, then perform a quick release.
  6. Make the garlic butter finish: While the broccoli is steaming, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant; do not let the garlic brown. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice.
  7. Combine: Transfer the perfectly steamed broccoli to a serving bowl. Pour the garlic butter mixture over the broccoli. Toss gently to coat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For restaurant-style steamed broccoli (like Texas Roadhouse copycat), use slightly more butter and finish with a sprinkle of salt and a dash of onion powder instead of lemon juice.
  • If you do not have a steamer basket, place the florets directly into a pot with about 1/2 inch of water, bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat immediately. Cook for the same time, checking frequently to prevent burning.
  • To achieve vibrant green broccoli, avoid overcooking. Stop cooking immediately once the color brightens.
