Ingredients
Scale
1 sleeve (about 4 cups) saltine crackers
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts or crushed candy canes (optional topping)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a layer of saltine crackers in a single layer on the foil.
In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil for exactly one minute. Do not overcook.
Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading quickly to cover them completely.
Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should be bubbly.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to soften.
Spread the softened chocolate until it covers the toffee layer. If using, sprinkle nuts or candy canes over the chocolate.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
Break the toffee into irregular pieces before serving. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Notes
Use salted crackers for the best sweet and salty contrast.
If you do not have brown sugar, you can substitute with granulated sugar, but the texture will be slightly different.
For a quicker set time, place the sheet pan in the freezer for 30 minutes instead of the refrigerator.
