Make a hearty, comforting dinner fast with these easy Texas Toast Sloppy Joes. This recipe features a rich, tangy ground beef filling served on thick, buttery, toasted Texas toast, often topped with melted cheese for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened (optional, for extra toast flavor)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the water, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the meat mixture.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to combine.
  4. While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. Toast the bread slices according to package directions until golden brown and crisp. If desired, lightly spread softened butter on one side of each slice before toasting.
  5. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto four slices of the toasted Texas Toast.
  6. If using cheese, top the meat mixture with shredded cheese. Place the remaining four toast slices on top to form sandwiches, or serve open-faced.
  7. If adding cheese, place the open-faced sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For garlic toast sloppy joes, use garlic-flavored Texas toast or spread a thin layer of garlic butter on the bread before toasting.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef.
  • If you prefer a sweeter sauce, increase the brown sugar by one tablespoon.
